- Assessment as learning - There are numerous learning activities where students must work as a team, discuss, reflect, peer-assess, and take personal initiative to establish and meet learning outcomes.
- Assessment for learning - Numerous self evaluations and checklists are included in the quest to ensure students develop personal responsibility towards their own learning. Teacher monitoring at each of the key components of the learning experiences will be provide appropriate additional scaffolding (if required) in order to successfully complete the rich task in culmination of the unit of work.
- Assessment of learning - Evaluation rubrics, used both by the teacher and by peers allows for summative evaluation of learning. Rubrics for the rich task allow students to see clear and explicit expectations for learning, and provide opportunities for peer evaluation. These measures will allow teachers to see whether learning intentions have been met, and what aspects of the unit need to be altered to ensure effective future learning.
Teacher Observation:
In addition to the assessment tools listed below, the teacher should be an active part of the learning process. This should be done by monitoring learning at all stages and learning experiences. Although many of the activities are to be completed online as a means of preparing students for their rich task, there are many opportunities for the teacher to monitor checklists and matrices to ensure students are on the right path to achieving learning expectations. Beginning at the 'Remembering Black Saturday' section, it is advised that teachers begin holding group conferences in order to guide proposed ideas. These meetings can be framed as 'liaising' with the town council to ensure all ordinances are being followed and the group is following the right direction. These meetings would provide ample opportunity for questioning, additional scaffolding, and formative assessment of progress.
Reflection (Discussion):
The school council competition element of the unit is meant to encourage peer discussion and reflection about learning and achievement in this unit. Following completion of the presentations, peer assessment rubrics will be collected and members of the class (acting as the school council) will have the opportunity to discuss things that were liked and things that could be improved about peer presentations. The class will have to work together, guided by teacher leadership, as to which presentation is the winner and will be implemented in actually designing the school yard.
Although students will be provided feedback on the unit via a rubric, it is suggested an open class discussion occurs at the end of the unit.
Assessment Tools:

| This assessment tool will be used to engage and activate student's for this iquest. Their responses to the introductory video will be recorded allowing prior knowledge and key questions to be assessed and inform future student learning. |
Investigating The Bushfires
|
This assessment tool will be used as an example of formative assessment. The success criteria will enable the students to identify how they have achieved each of the goals using a traffic lighting system. |
Mapping
| This treasure map assessment tool will be used as an example of formative assessment. The success criteria will enable the students to identify how they have achieved each of the goals using a traffic lighting system. |
Flora and Fauna
|
The assessment matrix was used for formative purposes so students can self assess their level of understanding and areas where more help is required. It has also been used to highlight the important components of the task. |
Fire Prevention

The Kinglake Community
| This KWL Chart has been used to determine what students know about their community. In completing this assessment tool, prior knowledge will be activated, and analysis and evaluation will be used to inform reflection on learning. |
Remembering Black Saturday
| This assessment tool has been used for students to explicitly demonstrate their analysis and evaluation of learning in a personal and connected context. This assessment tool is used to scaffold planning and outline thought processes. It has been used to provide formative assessment measures in order to ensure the links between community values and an appropriate memorial are being drawn. Furthermore, it is to ensure the memorial is being designed with a purpose and plan that is well thought out and documented.

Design Your School Yard
| This assessment tool is a summative evaluation of the rich task. It is an assessment of the final design of the school yard plan, and all the elements that are built into the task. It will provide the student with a clear set of expectations to meet while completing the task, and allow the teacher to evaluate the manner in which these expectations have been met by the students. |
| This assessment tool is a summative evaluation of the presentation element of this rich task. It is a peer evaluation form that every student will be required to use to evaluate their peers presentation, as well as a guideline for delivering their own presentation. These evaluations will be instrumental in judging the "winning design" that will be used to guide the actual school yard design. |
